Mike Hackett is the 2012 NWLA National Fielder of the Year after an incredible year defensively.  Eariler this week the NWLA announced all of the award winners as Hackett took home both the Regional and National award for fielding.  Hackett, who was also named a National First Team Fielder, made countless big plays for the Workhorses this past season.

This is the second time a WWL player has earned a National Fielder of the Year award.  In 2011, Jake MacWilliams earned the honor after winning the league's Gold Glove Award.  "Our league is full of talented players," stated Commissioner Pollard.  "Having Mike recognized Nationally is a huge accomplishment and we're all proud of him."

The Washburn Wiffleball League also took home another award for the Individual Defensive Highlight video which earned the National Play of the Year award.  In the video Hackett, along with other WWL players, can be seen making some of the most incredible plays from the 2012 season.  The video can be found below, along with a link to the complete list of National Award winners.

Tenant Terrapins Final Team to Join League

posted Dec 1, 2012, 8:10 AM by Washburn Wiffle   [ updated Dec 1, 2012, 8:11 AM ]

The Terrapins released their new logo this afternoon.

The Tenant Terrapins are the newest and final addition to the league for the 2013 season.  The Terrapins will be playing in the East Ave. Division and will be managed by Chris Wilson.

Wilson, who played for the Westside Whompers last season, has already made a few additions to his squad signing Ian Hall, Tom Barefoot, and Jake McEwen.  Sources say former Whomper Josh Neff is also "very interested" in the team, but no official word has been released about his status.

The Terrapins will have tough competition in the East Division competing against the defending champion Quackers, along with the very powerful Heat and clandestine Senators.  If everyone stays healthy, it will certainly be a very close race for the division title this season.

The Southampton Senators are the latest team to join the Washburn Wiffleball League.  The Senators are the seventh franchise that will be playing in 2013 and will be joining the East Ave. Division.  Kevin Hammond has been named the manager, but no additional player signings have been announced.

Hammond was a member of the Suns last season.

According to reports, the WWL has hired Kevin Hammond to join its Commissioner's Office as Chief Financial Officer.  It was said that talks began last weekend between Hammond and the Commissioner over some Tully's Tenders.  The discussion continued and earlier this week an agreement was made between the two parties.  "Kevin brings a lot to the table," stated Commissioner Pollard.  "We believe he can assist with finding new financial opportunities and we are happy he is a part of the team."  Hammond is expected to start work with the league as early as next week.

League Welcomes the Livingston Lightning

posted Nov 11, 2012, 8:29 PM by Washburn Wiffle   [ updated Nov 12, 2012, 7:41 AM ]

The Livingston Lightning unveiled their logo earlier today.

The Livingston Lightning are the second team to be added to the Washburn Wiffleball League for the 2013 season.  The Lightning were officially approved by the league this afternoon and will be joining the Main St. Division.  The team will be managed by former Dozer Matt Donegan, and have already made some quality acquisitions for this upcoming season.

Donegan will be playing outfield and has been a respectable hitter for the past two seasons.  Although he had 21 strikeouts last year at the plate, he managed a .564 OBP and belted 5 home runs.  Matt Hayes will be joining the Lightning from the Dozers as well.  As a rookie last season, Hayes
hit .582 with 4 HR and 28 RBI.  The Lightning have also picked up Alex Coleman and Matt Condame.  Despite winning only one game last season with the Suns, Coleman was a productive player.  In 10 games he batted .556 with 15 RBI and also showed some glimpses of hope on the mound.  As for Condame, he will be leaving the Whompers after recording 15 hits in just 5 games last season.  Condame, as well as Coleman, are both options to pitch and certainly make this team a lot better.

The Lightning are still working toward signing a final player, but so far they have taken steps in the right direction.  The team will have some tough competition in the Main St. Division, playing against both the Bombers and Workhorses.  It will be interesting to find out how well they stack up against some of the best in the league.

Hamilton Heat Newest Addition to WWL

posted Nov 9, 2012, 12:32 PM by Washburn Wiffle   [ updated Nov 9, 2012, 12:59 PM ]

Today the Heat unveiled their new logo for the upcoming season.

The Hamilton Heat are the newest member of the Washburn Wiffleball League.  It was announced early today that the Heat will officially be part of the WWL in 2013 and take over the Donia Dozers spot in the East Ave. Division.  The name is fitting.  Similar to the Miami Heat, many players have been planning to take their talents to South Beach for quite some time.

Throughout last season, the Quacker's Josh Swan began talking with other players about the possibility of building an elite team.  By the end of the World Series the team was virtually complete and Swan began negotiating with players.  "The Hamilton Heat look to bring something new to the table with a dynamic rotation and a lot of power at the plate," commented Swan.  With their acquisitions thus far, they have done just that.

Pitching begins with two-time WWL All-star Jake Kocher.  Kocher will be the ace of staff and joins the team after two seasons with the Bombers   Steve Gaffney, an All-star in 2012 and the Silver Slugger award recipient, comes over from the Dozers.  He is a force both at the plate and on the mound, and will likely join the rotation behind Kocher.  Moving with Gaffney is former Dozer Jon Cappotelli, who will provide even more power to an already lethal lineup.  Another All-star, Cappotelli has 10 career home runs in just 11 games. Finally Swan will be the manager of the squad and will provide consistency at the plate.  A career .600 hitter, he can also pick up some innings as well.  Swan had 3 wins last season for the Quackers, on their way to winning the World Series title.

The Heat have still yet to acquire their final player, but already have the traits of a very solid team.  "We are looking for a strong season and just trying to have a good time playing the game," said Swan.  Even though this team will have high expectations, it is still just about having fun.
